TRAK Forward Program - Therapuetic Recovery for Adults and Kids

The Inner East ‘TRAK Forward’ Program (Therapeutic Recovery for Adults and Kids) is a collaborative partnership between Anglicare Victoria, Drummond Street and Relationship Matters.

TRAK Forward is a therapeutic program that supports recovery and healing for adults and children who have been impacted by family and intimate partner violence.

TRAK Forward is a therapeutic program that supports recovery and healing for adults and children who have been impacted by family and intimate partner violence. We believe that safety, meaning, empowerment, and connection are essential for recovery. TRAK Forward offers a dedicated therapeutic practitioner, group-based family and intimate partner violence recovery programs, peer support recovery groups, and parent/child therapy. TRAK Forward’s person-centred interventions strengthen connections and relationships between parents and their children, empower adult survivors to make meaning of their experiences, and provide families with an opportunity to develop mutually supportive peer-based relationships.

TRAK Forward uses a trauma-informed relational framework that recognises both the short- and long-term impacts of family and intimate partner violence on individuals and families. The short-term aim of the program is to increase coping skills and safety, regain confidence and independence, repair attachment relationships, and reduce social isolation. The long-term aim of the program is to transition participants from these more specialist supports to other support systems, as part of restoration and recovery.

TRAK Forward provides free services designed to help individuals and families to feel empowered, to be heard, and to have a voice in their own recovery journey. Our programs are funded by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing and Family Safety Victoria.

We also offer coaching support around relationships, substance use (drug and alcohol), education, employment, homelessness and other needs.

YORS is funded by the Department of Health to provide young people with short to medium term flexible outreach wellbeing support to help them to better manage their mental health, develop practical life skills for independent living and self-care, engage in community life, access other health and social support services they need, and make the journey towards recovery and the life they want.

We can meet you: face to face, virtually via telehealth or by phone. Youth Outreach Recovery Support (YORS) complements the existing Integrated Therapeutic Community (ITC)—our Youth Residential Recovery service—by providing another support option to eligible young people. This support will also be provided before or after an ITC bed-based placement. This includes providing young people eligible for YORS with some access to the ITC group programs and activities on a day basis.

To find out more, please contact the Intake Service in your area. After a brief phone call to gather some information from you and assess your eligibility, you will be transferred to the YORS provider in your area. See details further down on this page.

The completely revised kit incorporates the strengthened measures for those affected by family violence in amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act 1997. It aims to help people in rental housing know their rights, have a secure home and limit any financial loss.

The kit is designed to provide detailed information for community workers to help them assist people affected by family violence. However, it also includes step-by-step examples to help renters affected by family violence who need to make applications to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) for orders, to fill out the applications themselves. The illustrated examples cover matters such as challenging a notice to vacate the property from the rental provider (landlord) that was triggered by the perpetrator’s behaviour.

Statewide Childrens Resource Program have collated a list of activity ideas for families whose children might be at home from school either now or in the future.

While this is a time that we have not experienced before, children will generally take their cues from the adults closest to them. Children’s security comes from the connection they have with adults who can manage what is happening. If we are panicking, distressed and fighting to get to the toilet paper, children feel overwhelmed because they can feel they have lost their safe support.

It is appropriate that we tell children that things will be different for a while but they are safe and we will get through this. Where possible, keep to routines as children find security in structure, though we need to model flexibility as well.

If young children are out of school for a number of weeks, it is important to assist, if you can with some counting/reading games/activities. Your child’s primary school should be able to give you some ideas as well as the sites below.

Days with Grey - 50 Play ideas

Being outside in nature can also calm, occupy and stimulate children. While the weather is still ok, even a bug hunt in the back yard may be a new thing, Don’t disturb the bugs but children can take some photos and maybe try and draw them. Coloured leaves will start appearing soon and some children can find calm is organising ie. smallest to biggest leaf, green through to red leaves. Some food based activities may be limited but things like pantry bingo where everyone helps decide what things to use up (it’s happening at my house right now!) can again, help keep children engaged and reduce anxiety.

Some screen time is fine, some late nights are fine, some junk food meals are ok (however that looks for you).

Free images of just about anything children love are available to print and colour in. Children can make up stories from several images and adults can write the words and staple the stories together.

Adolescents will probably have more guidance from their school but it can be very stressful for tees to feel trapped at home (even if they spend a lots of their time at home in their room-the loss of choice and self-determination can bring up lots of emotions, compounding concerns about missing work, getting things done on time etc. Despite sometimes limited communication from teens (not always), it is really important that we offer them some extra care-making them a hot drink/favourite food, running them a bath, burning a candle, encouraging them to get outside for a bit and hugs can be little things that can help.

Social distancing is not recommended between parents and their children while you are isolating at home. You may hug, cuddle, kiss and close play with you r children as much as you like.

During this time, it is also very important that parents are taking care of themselves. Being at home with children with little opportunities for socialisation, outside activities and energy burning play is stressful for both children and adults.

Find time, where possible for a hot cup of your favourite beverage (hot gin and tonic is not recommended), a shower or bath (baths/water can be very soothing for children as well-maybe with some food colouring, bubbles, toys that are not usually in the bath). Listen to your favourite music, read a lovely book, take to your support people, skype relatives who you cannot visit. Breathe deeply (use a relaxation app maybe), meditate, make your own art/craft and laugh as much as possible.

If your children are old enough, you may set some time that is just for them to do as they please and for you to do as you please, maybe an hour or so a couple of times a day, as it works for you. For those with very young ones, take advantage of nap times to do self-soothing things for you. This can allow you some time out and give everyone a time to draw breath.

Avoid too much Facebook catastrophe input and look for pages like The Kindness Pandemic-a worldwide page where people are reporting lovely things that are happening. Share these things with your children.

Listen to the facts, seek help as you need and be as kind to yourself as you are to others. You will all have lots of ideas yourselves and Pinterest, local FB pages are bursting with ideas for children, often local support pages.

If you are interested in asking about how to support your children or you just want to have a chat, please contact me Susie Lukis, Childrens Resource Program Reprsentative at susie.lukis@vt.uniting.org

St Kilda Mums was founded in 2009 by current CEO, Jessica Macpherson OAM. It quickly grew from a weekly working bee held in her living room to today’s thriving operation, consisting of over 3,000 volunteers rehoming more than 59,000 nursery items worth $7.3 million last year to more than 20,400 babies and children. All goods are distributed by Maternal and Child Health Nurses and social workers from more than 250 partner agencies across Victoria.

With material aid donations, financial support, incredible volunteer contribution, and a lot of hard work, St Kilda Mums can provide everything a family needs to welcome their baby home from the hospital for an average cost of $126. This could include a cot, pram, car seat, bouncer, breast pump, change mat, toiletries, nappies wipes, clothing and linen, books, toys and many other essentials from an extensive list of 66 items.

In May 2019, St Kilda Mums were forced to move their headquarters from St Kilda to Clayton after outgrowing the space in St Kilda. The new Clayton premises is three times bigger which allows the charity to support more families than ever before.

“We started out wanting to help mums in need. We believed that by recycling our much-loved babies and children’s equipment and clothing we could not only share the joy of motherhood but also save the earth’s precious resources. Nursery items that people desperately needed were just going to landfill,” says Jessica.

If you are a social worker please email to book a collection time.

To date, we have had a positive response to the resource.

Parents say that the social media platforms provide fresh ideas around the areas of playing, reading and learning.

Early childhood educators say that it’s handy for all of the resources being available in the one spot.

We are looking forward to expanding the resource in 2019.

Energy - Payment Difficulty Framework

1 January 2019 energy customers have new rights that help them to pay their energy bills.

1 January 2019 energy customers have new rights that help them to pay their energy bills.

To explain what the changes mean the Energy and Water Ombudsman created some useful resources including a new video, factsheet and webpage.

The key change is that the customer’s debt now triggers the different types of assistance available.

How your energy company should help

By law, energy companies have to offer help. The level of help offered is based on your debt.

If you have less than $55 owing and you want help to manage your account, your company must offer you three of the following payment options:

give you more time to pay the bill
work out a plan to pay overtime in instalments you can afford (with regular instalments)
work out a plan to pay overtime in instalments you can afford (with irregular instalments)
allow you to pay in advance.

If you have more than $55 owing, the company must offer:

a payment plan to pay for usage and repay arrears within two years
a payment plan where your arrears are on hold for minimum six months, while you make reduced payments (less than what you use at the property) and try to reduce your energy use.

The company must also:

check that you’re receiving government concessions and grants you’re entitled to
provide you with practical information about how to reduce the energy you use
talk to you about option to help you repay your arrears
	review your account and tariff

Workers

These are the minimum requirements for energy retailers – so moving forward your clients should be receiving this help.

If you contact an energy company on your clients behalf and are not happy with the assistance provided, contact EWOV for more help. You can do this by:

	calling 1800 500 509
lodging your complaint online at: https://www.ewov.com.au/complaints/online-complaint-form
	emailing: ewovinfo@ewov.com.au

CHAMPS (Children and Mentally Ill Parents) is a peer support program for children of parents who have a mental illness or mental health issues.

What is Champs?

CHAMPS (Children and Mentally Ill Parents) is a peer support program for children of parents who have a mental illness or mental health issues. The CHAMPS programs are for children aged between 8 and 12 although we do sometimes have children a little older or younger depending on their maturity.

CHAMPS is based on the belief that being a parent is both challenging and rewarding. Most families experience a range of difficulties at some stage. Living with a mental illness or mental health issues can make coping with such difficulties and looking after children even more stressful. All parents benefit from having breaks from their children. Children, too, can benefit from spending time with other trusted adults and from other children who may be having similar experiences. In this way they may be able to gain information and support about their parent’s illness.

Monash Health Adult Mental Health program is running the MAT Life Skills program.

What is the MAT Life Skills Program?

The MAT Life skills program is a physically active therapeutic program that combines the basics of behaviour management with the principles of traditional martial arts. It provides students with a structured opportunity to develop self-control and self esteem and it has been found it to be equally effective with both boys and girls, particularly those who display a lack of impulse control. It is our aim to teach students skills that they will transfer from the martial arts classes to other classes as well as to their behaviour in the schoolyard, at home, and in community contexts.

It is an eight-week program that focuses on teaching:

	How to identify various feelings
Appropriate ways to respond to these feelings
How to self-invest to achieve a positive future

The program does not teach children how to fight. There is no instruction in street fighting, throwing or weapons techniques. It does teach basic self-defence techniques such as palm blocks and evasions. It aims to provide participants with opportunities to experience success.

The program works around four basic teachings:

	Be Strong
	Be Calm
	Be Kind
	Try Hard

Who runs the group?

The group will be facilitated by staff from the MAT Life Skills program and Natalie Papps (FaPMI coordinator at Monash Health) will attend too. Natalie coordinates referrals for the group and will speak to you by phone before the group commences to find out more about your situation and to check if the group is suitable for your child.

Is there a cost to attend? - There is no cost for children to attend the group.

We welcome opportunities to catch up with you either at the beginning or the end of group time or, over the phone. Please let us know if your child is unable to attend for a week. We welcome your feedback and will be distributing evaluation forms at the end of the program. Please do not hesitate to contact Natalie on 0435684309 if you have any questions or concerns.

The group will run on Tuesdays from 4.00pm – 5.00pm for 8 weeks

Dates:

July 31st

August 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th

Project Respect is a not-for-profit, non-faith based support service for women with experience of the sex industry and women trafficked for sexual exploitation to Australia. We engage with women through our direct outreach to licensed brothels across the Greater Melbourne region and offer information and support where needed. This includes provision of case coordination and referrals to essential services and, intensive case management for women trafficked for sexual exploitation or women presenting with complex needs.

We advocate for women’s rights against violence, trafficking and exploitation to all levels of government, lobbying for broad policy change. We ensure women’s voices are heard by offering women a platform through our Women's Advisory Group to write, speak and meet directly with decision makers. Project Respect acknowledges that women's experiences in the sex industry are different - there is no clear right or wrong. Our views reflect our work and our experiences with a particular focus on violence and exploitation.

STREAT is a hospitality-based social enterprise that provides supported vocational training and holistic personal support to marginalised and disadvantaged young people in Melbourne. STREAT exists to make a difference to young people who face a range of barriers and disadvantage. We aim to provide a sense of connection, safety and belonging to our young people.

Our programs are open to marginalised, socially isolated or disadvantaged young people aged 16 to 25 who are in need of a supportive learning and work experience environment to get ready for work or study. We provide a compassionate and constructive social environment with new peers who are also keen to make positive change in their lives. Young people in our programs come from a diverse range of backgrounds and situations and generally face multiple barriers to work/training, including:

	Recent arrival migrants and refugees
	Early school leavers
Homeless, or at risk of homelessness
Living in Out of Home Care
Exiting, or have recently exited remand or have history of legal issues
	Learning difficulties
	LGBTIQ+
	Disability
	Mental health issues
	Past substance abuse issues

We offer young people a range of programs which can be completed individually or as a full pathway to gain more skills and confidence. All of our programs are client-centred, evidence based, integrated, flexible and are designed to wrap around a young person.

We want our young people to thrive in all parts of their lives. We want them to feel a sense of belonging at STREAT, and know deeply that we’re here to help them achieve a healthy self, healthy job and a healthy home.

Belong – We want a young person to always feel at home at STREAT.
Healthy self – We provide wrap-around support including individual case management, linkages to other specialist service providers as needed (drug and alcohol, mental health, housing services), group life skills programs, and creative and social activities.
Healthy job – We provide a range hospitality programs including accredited certificate courses, work experience programs, and short courses. We also provide workplace training and mentoring for each young person across STREAT’s inner Melbourne cafes and production kitchen. As a social enterprise, STREAT reinvests 100% of its café profits back into supporting and training youth.
Healthy home – We work towards our young people having a safe and long-term place to live through partnerships with a wide range of Melbourne housing services.

Programs

Over the last few years we’ve built a full suite of programs which can be done individually or as a full pathway as young people gain more skills and confidence:

‘Taster’ – A fun, hands-on three-hour experience tailored for youth organisations or schools with young people who might be interested in STREAT programs. Run on the first Tuesday of each month, this extremely popular group activity can accommodate 8-15 young people at a time. Tasters are a great introduction to STREAT and provide a 'taste' of some of the different professions available to them in the hospitality industry. The workshops take place in our coffee roastery and production kitchen and the young people make coffee and something delicious to eat.
‘Entree’ – For young people wanting to access hospitality focused work experience or to give STREAT a try before committing to a longer program.
‘Main Course’ – A 17 week fully supported program including on-the-job training and mentoring, a Life Skills program, creative and social engagement and individual case support (including linkages to specialist service providers), units towards a Cert III in Commercial Cookery.
‘STREATs Ahead’ – A program supporting the transition of STREAT graduates into open employment. Our current partners in this program are the Fonda Mexican chain and Epicure. Soon we hope to offer a fully supported Certificate III program / apprenticeship program, allowing young people to train as fully qualified chefs and bakers.

A typical week at STREAT in Main Course

In a typical week at STREAT our Main Course trainees will be involved in a group-based life skills program, TAFE and getting their qualifications, work experience in any one of our cafes or production kitchen, group-based creative and social activities, or having individual support sessions with our Youth Program team (which might include working through major issues like housing, drug and alcohol abuse, mental health, legal). All programs are integrated, flexible and ‘wrap’ around a trainee.

Life Skills modules

The group-based life skills program has key modules on emotional management, problem solving, healthy relationships, communication, and conflict management. Working with our Youth Programs Team, trainees also develop their personal goals at the start of each program, and then a self-management plan which we use through-out their transition to open employment.

Everyone has potential. Wear for Success helps them find it. If we can engender confidence in people by helping them look and feel the part on their journey towards employment, then we’ve done our job.

Wear for Success commenced in 2011 and is a not-for-profit organisation run by a dedicated group of volunteers and management team, including a volunteer Board. Since then we have helped over 3,800 people needing support on their journey back to work. We are a registered charity and donations to us over $2 are tax deductible.

The program is designed to support women and children who have children between the ages of 12 months-5 years old, and who have experienced trauma associated with homelessness and family violence.

The Little Sunbeams Playgroup is a program that is being run by Safe Futures Foundation, EACH and Uniting Wesley. The EACH Workers are specialists who work in the areas of speech pathology, occupational therapy and psychology.

The program is designed to support women and children who have children between the ages of 12 months-5 years old, and who have experienced trauma associated with homelessness and family violence.

The aim of the Playgroup is for families to have fun and spend special time together. The Playgroup has an informal structure and consists of singing songs, reciting rhymes, listening to a story and a simple craft activity. Songs, rhymes and stories are very important to support children's language, speech and literacy/numeracy development. Songs and rhymes can also be a useful tool for supporting families during everyday life. They support interaction between parent and child, can comfort children when distressed and can help decrease stress for children and parents in challenging situations.

Exert from headspace website

headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds, along with assistance in promoting young peoples’ wellbeing. This covers four core areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services.

Information and services for young people, their families and friends as well as health professionals can be accessed through this website, headspace centres, online counselling service eheadspace, the Digital Work and Study Service and postvention suicide support program headspace School Support.

headspace Clinical Reference Group oversee and approve clinical resources made available on this website.

Did you know?

One in four young people have experienced a mental health issue in the past 12 months – a higher prevalence than all other age groups. Alarmingly, suicide is the leading cause of death of young people, accounting for one third of all deaths.

Research shows that 75 per cent of mental health issues emerge before the age of 25. By treating these issues early and providing a holistic model of support, the risk of them developing into more serious problems is greatly decreased.

headspace outcomes

headspace undertakes a range of activities to increase the awareness of our services and how to access them among young people, their families, friends and the broader community.

A number of targeted national campaigns help headspace talk to hard to reach groups, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, and encourage them to access support at headspace or other appropriate mental health services.

We’re proud to say that headspace has provided over 1.5 million* services (centres, online and phone) helping 255,000* young people.

To find out more about our statistics as of March 2016, please download further information here.

headspace centres

headspace centres are located across metropolitan, regional and rural areas of Australia. They are built and designed with input from young people so they don't have the same look or feel as other clinical services. The centres are there to help people access health workers – whether it’s a GP, psychologist, social worker, alcohol and drug worker, counsellor, vocational worker or youth worker. You can find your nearest headspace centre here.

Services at a headspace centre are either free, or have a low cost. You can ask if there is a cost when you make your appointment. Some services require you to have a referral from a doctor; but don't worry headspace can help you with this as well.

The role that headspace centres play in helping young people has been overwhelmingly effective, with 60 per cent of our clients showing significant improvement. The other 40 per cent are still on their journeys and are continuing to receive services at headspace or alternative services.

eheadspace

eheadspace is an online and telephone service that supports young people and their families going through a tough time.

If you don't have a headspace centre nearby or you don't feel ready to visit a centre, eheadspace provides confidential support seven days a week between 9:00am and 1:00am.

To access eheadspace for the first time, you’ll need to register on their website or over the phone. To register, you will need to provide some information like your email address, postcode and age.

Sessions generally go for 30 - 60 minutes, and if you’re receiving support from a headspace centre or another service they may ask your permission to speak with your health worker to ensure eheadspace is providing the best support. But like headspace centres, everything is completely confidential unless they're seriously worried about your safety or the safety of someone else. When that happens, they must - by law - try to keep everyone safe and this means they might have to share their concerns with someone else.

eheadspace also holds monthly online information sessions where you can join group chats to talk on different things like sleep issues, self harm, helping out a friend and more.

Register and chat now at eheadspace, or call 1800 650 890.

As of March 2016, 55,390 young people accessed eheadspace, resulting in 185,459 sessions serviced by eheadspace mental health professionals.

Other Services

headspace School Support works with schools in Australia to prepare for, respond to, and recover from suicide. It's an initiative that is funded by the Federal Government (Department of Health). For more information on the service, click here.

The headspace Digital Work and Study Service is an online and phone service for young people aged 15-24 years who need support with their work or study issues. The service can help young people figure out where they want to go and how to get there with work or study. Click here to find out more.

The headspace National Telehealth is for young people aged 12-25 years who are based in regional or rural areas in Australia and are already accessing support at a headspace Centre. This service requires a referral from a headspace centre which allows a young people to speak with a qualified psychiatrist online. Learn more here.

Confidentiality

When you talk to headspace, what you say is kept confidential. This means nothing you say can be passed on to anyone else without your permission. However, there are a couple of exceptions. If headspace is seriously worried about your safety or the safety of someone else they must - by law - try to keep everyone safe. This means they might have to share their concerns with someone else. For more information read our privacy policy or feel free to chat to headspace.

The Line - a behaviour change program for young people

The Line is a primary prevention behaviour change campaign for young people aged 12 to 20 years and supports parents, caregivers, teachers and other influencers, too.

The Line is a primary prevention behaviour change campaign for young people aged 12 to 20 years and supports parents, caregivers, teachers and other influencers, too.

Our Watch commissioned Hall and Partners Open Mind in 2014 to conduct research to inform The Line campaign’s approach from 2015. Researchers surveyed 3,000 people, including 2,000 12 to 24 year olds, conducted 49 focus groups and undertook depth interviews with young people and parents, and interviewed experts and stakeholders.

The research reveals that young people are struggling to work out what healthy, respectful relationships look like.

1 in 3 young people don’t think that exerting control over someone else is a form of violence.
1 in 4 young people don’t think it’s serious when guys insult or verbally harass girls in the street.
1 in 4 young people think it’s pretty normal for guys to pressure girls into sex.
15 per cent of young people think it’s ok for a guy to pressure a girl for sex if they’re both drunk.
1 in 4 young people don’t think it’s serious if a guy, who’s normally gentle, sometimes slaps his girlfriend when he’s drunk and they’re arguing.
More than one quarter of young people think it’s important for men to be tough and strong.
16 per cent of young people think that women should know their place.

Gender stereotypes appear to be having a significant negative impact on young people’s expectations and behaviours when it comes to intimate relationships. Parents aren’t talking to their children about the issues, it’s not being adequately covered in the education system, and community leaders are not addressing it.

As a result, young people are being left in a vacuum and require information and guidance from parents and teachers. Social media is playing a central role in young people’s relationships; actions are being played out publicly, and previously unacceptable behaviours offline become easier to do online. This is giving young people even less opportunity to learn to understand and negotiate respectful, healthy and equal relationships.

Young people are being left to figure it all out for themselves from other sources: their friends, their ‘heroes’, the media’s portrayal of women, pornography, and porn-inspired popular culture.

Encouragingly, the research reveals that young people universally agree that behaviours that make a girl or woman feel frightened, diminished or intimidated ‘cross the line’ and are unacceptable. However, the research shows there is a group of young men who are more likely to justify and potentially perpetrate violence against girls and women in the future.

The Line encourages healthy and respectful relationships by challenging and changing attitudes and behaviours that support violence.

New research shows we need to challenge violence supportive attitudes among youth. Read the Our Watch media release on The Line campaign here.

Why is kindergarten important?
Kindergarten programs help children with their language, development and self-confidence. Research shows an early start and more time at kindergarten prepares children for success at school and has a positive impact later in life.

What is Early Start Kindergarten?
Early Start Kindergarten provides free or low cost kindergarten to eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander three year old children where programs are offered by a qualified teacher. Some services will be able to offer your child a place in a program for four year olds or a mixed age group.

Applications for Early Start Kindergarten funding are made by the kindergarten service on your behalf and the grant is paid directly to the service.
