Flat Out is a state-wide advocacy and support service for women who have/had contact with the criminal justice and prison systems. We are an independent, not for profit, community based organisation managed for and by women that aims to prevent women from going to prison and to keep women out of prison after release. Flat Out is committed to providing assistance and support at the highest professional standard, within a holistic, client-focused, feminist support and advocacy framework.

Women Transforming Justice project

We are partnering with the Darebin Community Legal Centre and the Law and Advocacy Centre for Women to deliver the Women Transforming Justice (WTJ) project. This is an innovative pilot project funded by the Victorian Legal Services Board to provide an integrated service delivery model.

The project aims to keep women out of prison by linking women on remand with the WTJ project when they are first taken into custody, and addressing the drivers of their incarceration at an individual and systemic level.

The project team will also build the capacity of professionals working with women in the criminal justice system to understand the links between gender and women’s criminalisation by collecting data and information, developing and delivering training and education and contributing to the development of laws and policies.

The Position

We are seeking two Senior Outreach Support and Advocacy Workers to be part of the pilot project. The senior workers will be integral to the project, working together with the Flat Out team and lawyer from the Law and Advocacy Centre for Women to provide flexible and holistic support to assist women to obtain bail and live safely and stably in the community. The Women Transforming Justice project manager will also assist the senior workers by providing project coordination and support.

Within this integrated service delivery model, the assertive outreach worker will provide personalised and planned outreach-based case management support and advocacy to women in their community of choice. Working from a client-centred approach, the senior worker will support women in relation to their housing, health (including alcohol and drug use and mental health), reunification with their children, relationships with family and community, financial security and legal concerns.

The position reports to the Team Leader, Flat Out.
